Disability Living Allowance
Disability living allowance (DLA) is a benefit for people who have a mental or physical illness or disability. You can claim DLA if you are under 65. If you are over 65 you may be able to claim attendance allowance instead.
If you claim DLA before your 65th birthday, it will continue to be paid after you reach 65 if you satisfy the other qualifying conditions.
You can claim DLA whatever your income or savings. You do not have to have paid national insurance contributions. It can be claimed whether you are working or not. It can be paid on top of any other benefit except attendance allowance. It does not reduce the amount you get in any other benefit and may, indeed, increase the amount you get. It is tax-free.
DLA has two parts - one is based on care and the other on mobility needs.
