Bridges often go unnoticed but they form an essential part of the highway network. Hertfordshire Highways owns and is responsible for approximately 1300 bridges and highway structures, with a further 400 the responsibility of rail and water companies.
Bridges are continuously assessed and tested for signs of stress caused by increasingly heavy traffic. When a bridge is found to be inadequate a number of options are available, including placing a vehicle weight/restriction, placing a prop around and under the structure and closing the bridge for replacement or restructuring.
Bridges are important when considering abnormal loads that want to travel through the county. Hertfordshire Highways provides detailed route information regarding weight and height restrictions to both police and transportation companies.
